The Department of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, College of Pharmacy, SRIPMS, was started in the year 1999, by offering M.Pharmacy course in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology specialization, with an aim of fulfilling the global needs of the rapidly developing revolutionary field of science i.e., Biotechnology. The Department is served by dedicated well qualified Staff and provides state of art infrastructural and academic ambience ideal for higher studies and research. All the serving faculty members of the department have completed their doctorate utilizing the laboratory facilities in the institute as part of their doctoral work. The department is equipped with all instruments needed to perform advanced research in biotechnology like gel documentation system, PCR, Real time Motic microscope, fermentor, Micro centrifuge and vertical laminar air flow cabinets. The department has more than surplus reference books and educational CDs in the related fields of study.

Highlights of the Pharmaceutical Biotechnology:

The department has so far brought out more than 70 Post graduates who are placed well in various fields with nearly half of them successfully completing their doctoral degrees. Over 40 research papers have been presented by the Dept. staff and students at national level conferences with 10 best paper awards.

The areas of research undertaken in the department include determination of genetic level microbial resistance and its elimination, In-vitro antibacterial combinations against clinical pathogens, bio-catalytic conversion of pharmaceuticals including chiral drugs, Strain improvement towards biopolymer production, Isolation of antibiotic producing strain fromsoil, In- silico approach towards appropriate antibiotic selection against clinical isolates, restriction digestion activity study on free and immobilized enzymes, Production of bio-surfactants of industrial importance, serum bactericidal assay for Antimicrobial drugs and Bioautographic determination of antibactericidal agents in human plasma, In-vitro mutagenicity and anticancer activity study, study on immuno modulating activity of Pharmaceuticals and natural products, Antimicrobial studies including Antitubercular activity studies on synthetic compounds by Alamar blue assay method.

The post graduate students have won great laurels for themselves and the institute with five students securing gold medals for first rank at the University level. Mr. Asadulla Khan (2002 – 2004), Mr. Sreedhar Babu Thokala (2003 – 2005) won The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, Chennai Gold Medal for Tamil Nadu state First rank in M.Pharmacy for two consecutive years followed by Ms. S.V. Remya (2009-2011) and Mr. Muddu Krishnaiah (2013-2015) and Vishnuja V (2017-2019). More than 10 students during their second year of post-graduation have secured The Tamil Nadu Pharmaceutical Sciences Welfare Trust Scholarship awards including first place on six occasions.
